Listen & Draw Activity

Winter Storytelling Activity

Listening to traditional stories is a great winter pastime. It’s the perfect opportunity to have a clear mind, focus on the words and honor the history being told.

For this listen and draw activity, you can ask an elder to share stories, find a podcast or use the videos linked below. While you listen, draw along with the story and anything that takes place inside your head. Connecting the story to a personalized piece of art — made by yourself — offers a unique form of reflection. You could even gift it to the person who read or told you the story.

Practice this concept by listening to one, or all, of these three stories!

Choose the one that most appeals to you and let’s begin.

  1. To prepare, gather art supplies and find a quiet place to listen.
  2. Listen to the short story in full. After hearing it once, take notes in your head on the prominent scenes that came to mind.
  3. Listen to it once more. Compare the scenes you originally thought to any new ones that sparked and begin drawing your visual representation of the story!

It’s as simple as that!
